Scope

  • 13.6 Equipment and furnishings (ATA 25) — B2 level 3, not part of any B2L rating: electronic emergency equipment requirements.
  • 13.12(a) fire and smoke detection and warning; extinguishing; system tests — B2 level 3, B2L Airframe Systems rating level 3.
  • 13.12(b) portable fire extinguishers — level 1.

Electronic emergency equipment (13.6)

The B2 focus is on the electrically powered or electronic items within ATA 25 and closely related chapters:

Equipment Key points
Emergency locator transmitters — fixed automatic ELT plus survival/portable ELTs in life rafts or near exits 406 MHz + 121.5 MHz; g-switch; battery life; registration; test only within permitted windows
Emergency lighting and exit signs Integral batteries, ARMED switch logic, duration tests
Escape-slide and raft systems Electrical "slide armed" indication, door-mounted slide pressure indications, slide/raft lights powered by their own batteries
Megaphones, portable lights Battery condition
Cockpit and cabin crew emergency call/evacuation signalling EVAC command horns and lights linked through the cabin interphone/CIDS
Underwater locator beacons on CVR/FDR 37.5 kHz pinger, water-activated, battery expiry
Crash axe, first-aid, defibrillator (AED) Battery check for electronic items

Requirements to remember: equipment must be approved, installed in the location shown in the cabin configuration, accessible, serviceable (in-date batteries and seals) and placarded. Missing or unserviceable items are handled via the MEL.

Fire zones and detection philosophy

  • Engine and APU compartments: fire and overheat detection plus extinguishing.
  • Cargo compartments: classes by accessibility; Class C (and E for freighters) have smoke detection and, for Class C, a built-in extinguishing system.
  • Lavatories: smoke detectors and automatic waste-bin extinguishers (heat-activated nozzles).
  • Avionics bay: smoke detection with extraction.
  • Wheel wells, bleed ducts, wings: overheat (duct leak) detection loops.
