Why this sub-module matters
10.2 is level 2 for all categories and has the largest single question allocation in Module 10 (the syllabus asks for a "deep understanding" of licences, privileges and authorisations). Expect numbers: ages, years, months, form numbers.
Licence categories (66.A.3)
| Category | Subcategories / scope |
|---|---|
| A | A1 aeroplanes turbine; A2 aeroplanes piston; A3 helicopters turbine; A4 helicopters piston |
| B1 | B1.1 aeroplanes turbine; B1.2 aeroplanes piston; B1.3 helicopters turbine; B1.4 helicopters piston |
| B2 | Avionics — applicable to all aircraft |
| B2L | Avionics "light" — all aircraft except Group 1; system ratings: com/nav, instruments, autoflight, surveillance, airframe systems (minimum one) |
| B3 | Piston-engine non-pressurised aeroplanes of 2 000 kg MTOM and below |
| L | L1C, L1, L2C, L2, L3H, L3G, L4H, L4G, L5 — sailplanes, powered sailplanes and ELA1 aeroplanes, balloons, airships |
| C | Base maintenance — aeroplanes and helicopters |
Aircraft groups (66.A.5)
| Group | Aircraft |
|---|---|
| Group 1 | Complex motor-powered aircraft; multi-engine helicopters; aeroplanes (other than piston) with maximum certified operating altitude above FL290; aircraft with fly-by-wire; gas airships other than ELA2 |
| Group 2 | Other than Group 1: 2a single turboprop aeroplanes (and turbine aeroplanes EASA classifies as lower complexity); 2b single turbine helicopters (and some multi-turbine); 2c single piston helicopters (and some multi-piston) |
| Group 3 | Piston-engine aeroplanes other than Group 1 |
| Group 4 | Sailplanes, powered sailplanes, balloons and airships other than Group 1 |
Ratings required (66.A.45)
| Licence | Group 1 | Group 2 | Group 3 | Group 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B1, B2, C | Individual type rating | Type, manufacturer subgroup or full subgroup rating | Type or full group rating | B2 only: full group |
| B2L | — | Manufacturer subgroup or full subgroup | Full group | Full group |
| B3 | Single rating "piston-engine non-pressurised aeroplanes of 2 000 kg MTOM and below" | |||
| A | No rating on the licence — task training and company authorisation (145.A.35) |
- Type rating requires approved type training (theory + practical) per Appendix III; the first type rating in a category/subcategory also needs on-the-job training (OJT) (not required for category C).
- For Group 2 and 3, a type may also be endorsed by type evaluation plus demonstrated practical experience.
- Manufacturer subgroup rating (B1/C): type requirements met for at least 2 types from the same manufacturer; full subgroup: at least 3 types from different manufacturers.
- B1 Group 3 and B3 ratings carry limitations (e.g. pressurised aeroplanes, metal structure, composite structure, wooden structure, metal tubing and fabric) unless experience is shown; limitations are removed by demonstrating experience or by a practical assessment by the competent authority (66.A.50).
