Module 7 essays: how to write answers that pass
847 words · checked 2026-10-03 · Pro
Under EASA rules (Reg. 2023/989) Module 7 is the only module with essays: 2 essay questions, 20 minutes each (40 minutes added to the multiple-choice time). UK CAA candidates write 2 essays in Module 7A or 7B, and also 1 essay each in Modules 9A/9B and 10 - the method below works for all of them.
How essays are marked
- Each question has a model answer split into key points (the important facts and steps an examiner expects).
- Pass: at least 75 % of the required key points and no significant error related to any required key point (Appendix II 1.8).
- Essays are marked on technical content, but also on clear, logical English that someone else could follow.
- If you fail only the essay part, only the essay part is retaken (after the waiting period).
Key fact: A single significant error (for example a dangerous procedure) can fail an essay even if you list most key points. Never guess a safety-critical value - describe the principle and refer to the approved data.
The 20-minute plan
| Time | Action |
|---|---|
| 0-3 min | Read the question twice. Underline the task words (describe, explain, list, compare). Jot down 8-12 key points in the margin. |
| 3-5 min | Order the points: before → during → after the task (or cause → effect → action). |
| 5-17 min | Write. One paragraph per stage, short sentences, correct terms. |
| 17-20 min | Check: have you covered safety, documentation and testing? Correct any errors and make handwriting legible. |
Aim for about 250-400 words - quality of key points matters more than length.
